Beowulf

Beowulf

If you are the type of person who pick you up a book, checks it out and never read’s it. Then you have not crossed paths with the Epic Beowulf; Translated by Burton Raffle. This story has It all from happiness to sad it also has a lot of action. Beowulf is a man that is fear less. He races Beca, fight demons, and creatures.
In the text it never talks about   Beowulf having a race with Beca. On the other hand in the film it talks about how Beowulf challenges Beca to swim across the ocean. Unferth is the one that makes the comment about Beowulf loosing the race, but Beowulf says he has lost the race in order to save Beca and other members of the ship because there were serpents and demons in the water. Also in the text it never says anything about Unferth being jealous of Beowulf. He is jealous of Beowulf because he came to save them from Grendel the creature.
Another huge difference was when Grendel shows up at mead-hall. In the text Grendel shows up because he is curious about what the humans are doing in mead-hall. In the film he shows up in mead-hall because all the noises and music are hurting his ears.  He wants the music to stop so he starts to fight Beowulf .They are both unarmed. Grendle throws Beowulf everywhere as if he were an empty sack. Beowulf  gets  up and  jumps  on  the  back  of  Grendle  and he    notices  a weak spot, his ears  are vibrating  really  hard  because  it  hurts him. Beowulf  decides  to bust  Grendle’s  eardrum, and  because  of that Grendle  does not notice  that  he has tangled  himself  in some chains. He decides to  go back  home but his  hand  is tangled and Beowulf  takes advantage  of Grendle  and  he breaks  of Grendle’s  arm  by slamming  the door on it. while it was stuck there. In contrast to the book Grendle dose not have a weak spot
The final difference between the book and the movie is with Grendle‘s mother. In the text she lives in a swamp and does not come out of it at all. In the movie he actually comes out of the swamp because she wants to avenge hers sons death. She first starts by killing all the Geat’s of Beowulf. She hangs them upside down in the mead-hall but with the exception of Beowulf.

Beowulf is a man who has many adventures he fights demons and creatures. In his life time he did many brave things. He did all of this because he wanted to live forever as an epic hero.  He also became king and then gave his life in order to save his people. That is Beowulf!

                             The Devil and Tom Walker

                                                       By Washington Irving

This story  has indirect an direct characterization.  Because at the starting  of the story it talks about Tom  walker having a conversation with someone that doesn't  have one name but many names in different places. Who is the devil . But Tom was not scared of talking to the devil. That is a indirect characterization because it does not tell you that Tom is a brave  person. As the devil talks to Tom he tells him about a buried  treasure that once a pirate named kid had buried .He told him that he will give him some of that money in exchange of something but in the story it did not say what it was. But it did not talk about what it is he wanted.  Before he made a decision  he  had to talk to his wife about what happen in the forest and then he told her he did not take the offer .And that was and indirect because he is not sure to  barging  with the devil. Later it talks about his wife getting mad because he does not make a deal with the devil. So she decides the next day to go out and look for the devil so she can barging  and get the treasure form the devil. She will not split the treasure with her husband that is what she says to herself. That is a direct characterization because she says she is not going to split the money with Tom because she is gritty. Then the next day he notice that his wife had carried off in a sack a " silver teapot and spoon with a every portable iteam." This is a indirect characterization  because she did not care about what Tom has said and went on her own to look for the man in the dark sweater "Devil" to try to bargain with him for the gold that he offered to Tom.
Later in the story Tom can not find his wife. He is worried about his wife because she takes the silver out their house into the swamp, so he looks for her and finds the sack where all the silver was carried but his wife was no were to be found. Out of the no were he decides to look inside the sack and he finds her heart inside. Then he looks for the devil to thank him for getting rid of her wife and that's a direct characterization. As you can see this short story has a lot of direct and indirect  characterization.
